It had taken a little bullying on his part but damned if the server didn't arrive on the next transport.

Kimura had gone to inspect the arrival, transport, and installation of their new equipment. They'd put it on an overnight flight and from the way the specialists explained it, everything was going smoothly and it was all but complete.

That was the progress from what he could tell, which admittedly wasn't very much. Still, he didn't need to know everything about it to know that it worked.

Relying on his fellow soldiers was what being a soldier was all about, after all.

"I guess your little talk with them brought results."

Kimura cleared his throat as Hanai approached and snapped a quick salute, which he answered with one of his own.

"Well, you threaten to introduce people to the Zoo and they suddenly realize what we're doing out here."

"Which is?"

"Keeping the Zoo away from them. Was there something you needed, Major, or did you want to see the server being installed like I did?"

She smiled. "As much as I do want to watch it, I am here to remind you that you have the video conference call that the US commandant is setting up. He has invited all his counterparts to join him, although I suppose that doesn't necessarily mean all of them will."

"Most of the main players will likely be represented," he commented. "The Russians, Chinese, French, Brits, and Germans won't want it said that they don’t play nice with the other children."

"What do you think he is attempting to achieve with this kind of meeting?"

Kimura motioned for her to walk with him as he marched to his office at a brisk pace. "I am not terribly certain. The time to bring everyone together in a show of unity was years ago."

Hanai smirked. "I cannot help but agree. It seems everyone is too busy defending their little patch of Zoo from the perceived nefarious plans of others to listen to one another. While we might all recognize the common threat, they will likely be too busy guarding their own bases to consider any kind of joint action."

"True." He sighed and shook his head. "Well, we'll soon see, I suppose."

She pulled his office door open for him and he smiled as they entered. Once she’d closed the door behind them, she joined the commander in a seat that would be away from the camera since the event was meant for base commanders only.

It was one of the weird moments when he suddenly realized how many people had invested so much of their lives into this place. Kimura fell silent and waited as, one by one, the base commanders began to join the video conference.

As expected, the Middle East, the Sahara Coalition, Israeli, and Indian representatives were notably absent when the rest of the group had gathered and were ready for the meeting to begin.

"It should be noted that I will liaise with my counterparts from Israel and India regarding the significance of this conference," the French base commander stated.
